Bringing comfort to Mackay BreastScreen patients

Did you know there was an estimated number of 19,974 new cases of breast cancer in Australia in 2020? BreastScreen Queensland is a screening and assessment service for women to detect early signs and symptoms of breast cancer. The Mackay Hospital Foundation has supported the Mackay BreastScreen Centre for multiple years now, donating goods to help patients feel more comfortable.

The Hospital Foundation has donated numerous items over the past few years.
— Jacinta Richmond, Nurse Unit Manager at BreastScreen Mackay

“A few of the donated items that come to mind would be the new lounge suite, TV, and some of the framed pictures on the walls. Having these items here at BreastScreen provides a nice environment and a distraction, which makes patients feel more comfortable. When patients come into the waiting room for their results, it is a very anxious time. This is where we do a lot of counselling, and it is nice to be able to do it in a non-clinical environment. Donated items make our clients feel comfortable – they can come in, get a cup of tea or coffee, sit on the couch, and look at the pictures or TV on the wall. It’s a really good diversion for them, and helps to take away some of their stress.”

Organisations such as the Lazy Runners Club have chosen to donate to the Mackay Hospital Foundation because it’s a local organisation, supporting local. The money stays locally, and it strives to help the people of the Mackay region. If you would like to donate, you can do so here.
