Volunteering a labour of love

17-Sep-2014

When married couple Heather and Dennis Tuckerman aren’t volunteering with the Foundation, they can be found at the Lions Club, or Scouts, the Endeavour Foundation, Friends of the MECC…

Volunteering is something the Tuckerman’s have always done – together.

Heather currently works the Foundation trolley and hospital Info Desk, and Dennis (previously of the Info Desk and Children’s Ward Playgroup) is our only volunteer at the Mackay Base Hospital Community Rehabilitation Centre.

“I would recommend volunteering to get to know other people and to get to know your area,” Heather said.

Bermuda born Heather moved to Mackay in 1979, where she first started community volunteering after seeing an ad looking for Meals on Wheels delivery drivers.

Heather spent 35 years in the role, while husband Dennis did the same for 20 years.

Heather has 11 years’ experience as a Lions Club member and 43 years as an auxiliary member. Dennis has been with the club for over 45 years.

Dennis has supported Scouts for over 50 years. His wife has spent 43 years as a Scouts club member, including 31 years as a leader welcoming new children to the club.

Heather has volunteered 33 years with the Endeavour Foundation. Dennis volunteered for 17 years at brain injury support group Headway.

The two are long-term Friends of the MECC – Dennis for 18 years and Heather for 22 years.

They’ve both dedicated 10 years to pumping life into the Red Cross Blood Bank, 20 years with Parents Assist, 20 years with the Mackay Regional Council library and 5 years with Cardiac Heart Support Group.

Heather has also spent 45 years as a lady mason at the Order of the Eastern Star, 2 years as both a Salvation Army donation collector and Clean Up Australia Day volunteer. She volunteered at three school tuckshops for 7 years when her children were young.

One thing is for sure – we feel very lucky to have the Tuckerman’s wealth of volunteering experience on board!
