Xstrata Coal and the Glenden community partner for the Emergency Department

15-Mar-2012

The staff at the Emergency Department at the Mackay Base Hospital are thrilled with the donations from Newlands Coal (an Xstrata Coal operation) of a Baby Training Manikin and a Special Venous Access Device. Newlands Coal is proud to provide support to the Emergency Department of the Mackay Base Hospital and to help the community through the provision of additional health care equipment which falls outside of government budget.

Steve Hubert, General Manager Xstrata Coal, Mackay Region said “ Our team contacted the Mackay Hospital Foundation to find out what kind of medical equipment was on their wishlist, and chose the Emergency Department as the area for our donations as it will benefit everyone who lives in our region.”

The Baby Training Manikin will train staff for traumatised, unwell babies. The Venous Access Device will enable a clinician to provide life-saving fluids or blood, when a vein cannot be accessed. Louise McGrath Clinical Nurse Consultant said that all staff of the Emergency Department we’re very excited about this overwhelming support. “The Baby Training Manikin provides us with the opportunity to up-skill in the assessment and management of children by taking part in mock arrests and trauma scenarios in the ED setting. The Special Venous Access Device is used when vascular access is difficult, predominantly for children.“

And there is more to come. Newlands Coal and the Glenden community have raised $10,000 towards the purchase of a Panda Warmer, a state-of-the-art equipment to manage heat loss in children involved in trauma or who are seriously unwell. The staff of Myer Mackay have taken up the challenge to raise the remaining amount of $10,000 until July 2012.

The Manager of the Mackay Hospital Foundation, Mayte Sanchez, thanked Newlands Coal and the Glenden community for their donations and fundraising efforts “It is wonderful to see a company supporting its local hospital and partnering with its community. My thanks also goes to all those who fundraise and donate to local charities. It just shows the real and positive impact donations to local charities can have on frontline services and standards of care.”
