Donation helps Palliative Care Patients

31-Jan-2012

Pink Day in the Valley, a local charity group supporting cancer services in our area, donated $5,000 to the Mackay Hospital Foundation to purchase a state-of-the-art device, a Portable Oxygen Concentrator, for the Oncology Unit at the Mackay Base Hospital.

This device is used by palliative care patients, who are in the last months. The portable and light weight concentrator provides oxygen to a dying patient at much higher levels than the levels of air.

Brenda Sheumack, Palliative Care Nurse Mackay Base Hospital: “This is a real asset for our services and it will be part of our free equipment loan pool. Patients have the possibility to return to their home environment, equipped with a device that will help them maintain independence and dignity during their final days”.

Mayte Sanchez, Manager Mackay Hospital Foundation thanked Pink Day in the Valley for their valuable contribution to the Mackay Base Hospital. ”As local charities we rely on our communities to support us through donations and fundraising activities, so that we can support our local health services and have the best possible health care on our doorstep”.

The inspiration behind the local charity Pink Day in the Valley was the sad loss of one of the organiser’s wife to breast cancer. In 2007 a group of half a dozen, led by Dave Woodland started up this charity in support of cancer patients and their families living in the Mackay region. Dave said: “Last year in September we contacted the Mackay Hospital Foundation to discuss how we could work together in supporting cancer services at our local public hospital. As a local group, it is important to us to know that our funds are staying local, and that the impact is being felt right here at home”.

Pink Day in the Valley will be running a number of events throughout 2012, beginning with a Pink Fools Golf Day at Mirani on 1st April.  If you would like to know more about our events please email pditv@bigpond.com or telephone Jo on 49541669 or get in touch with the Mackay Hospital on 4885 6777
