The Blue River Mackay Lions Club have raised $10,000 at their second annual golf charity event in September, sponsored by Mastermyne. Money raised will be donated to the Mackay Hospital Foundation to buy special equipment for the Renal Unit at Mackay Base Hospital. This golf day is becoming a regular event on the golfing calendar around the Mackay area.
Blue River Mackay Lions Club spokeswoman Melissa Green said Lions clubs were renowned for their efforts in raising awareness and funds for needy community causes. “We see no better opportunity than to work with the Mackay Hospital Foundation for the benefit of the whole community. This is a great cause and we are proud to be able to work with them on this initiative,” she said. The Blue River Mackay Lions Club was chartered in December 2010 and is the newest services club in Mackay.
Renal Unit acting Nurse Unit Manager Kaylene Wadd said the money would be used to buy items that improved patient comfort. The Renal Unit has 11 chairs and opens from 6am-11pm to accommodate three shifts of patients. Kaylene Wadd said the Unit provided up to 140 haemodialysis sessions a week and offered education and monitoring of patients with chronic kidney disease. “We thank the Blue River Lions for choosing us again as their charity of choice and supporting another Unit within the Mackay Base Hospital”Making a donation to your local hospital through the Mackay Hospital Foundation is quick and simple. The donations received by the Foundation are given to the specialised area or hospital that YOU have chosen. If a hospital or area is not chosen in the MHHS district donations are allocated to ‘greatest needs’.
