The Blue River Lions Club had their inaugural Charity Golf Day on 9 September 2011, where they raised over $13,000 for the Mackay Hospital Foundation to support a loan equipment pool for the Palliative Care Unit.Melissa Green, Treasurer of Blue River Mackay Lions Group said: ”Blue River Lions Group would like to thank the major sponsor of the day, Mastermyne, who gave a cash donation of $2,500 and all of our individual hole sponsors. The day was enjoyed by all. A highlight of the day was a media advertising package donated by The Daily Mercury and 4MK that was auctioned off for $3,500. Due to the success of the day, the Lions Group have already committed to making the Charity Golf Day an annual event. Blue River Mackay Lions was chartered in Dec 2010 and caters for members who want to make a difference in their community but are time poor. We only meet once a month. We don’t want to do lots of sausage sizzles throughout the year to raise money, so this is why the Golf Day was ideal.’
Mayte Sanchez, Manager of the Mackay Hospital Foundation: "I would like to congratulate the Blue River Lions Club for their successful golf charity event. We are grateful that the Blue River Lions Club haven chosen us as their charity of choice and the proceeds go towards a Loan Equipment Pool for palliative care patients at the Mackay Base Hospital.
Individuals living with cancer or progressive palliation will have the opportunity to loan safe, well maintained equipment to assist with completing their daily tasks at home, to support the safety of their carers (often family members) and to enable quality of life, particularly during the end stages of the dying process.
Having this loan pool means that palliative patients have the possibility to return to their home environment, equipped with safe and appropriate equipment to help them maintain independence and dignity.”
Blue River Mackay Lions Club Vice President Ross Chisholm said: “Lions clubs are renowned for their efforts in raising awareness and funds for needy community causes, and we see no better opportunity than to work with the Mackay Hospital Foundation for the benefit of the whole community. This is a great cause, and we are proud to have raised over $13,000 to support it ”

The donations received by the Foundation are given to the specialised area or hospital that YOU have chosen. If a hospital or area is not chosen in the MHHS district donations are allocated to ‘greatest needs’.
